3–6 months
Gross motor
- Holds head steady without support
When held upright, the head stays steady instead of bobbing.
- Rolls over (tummy to back, then back to tummy)
Rolls in at least one direction; both directions usually follow within a few weeks.
- Pushes down on legs when held standing
Held upright with feet on a firm surface, the legs straighten and take some weight.
Fine motor
- Reaches for a toy
Sees something interesting and swipes or reaches for it on purpose.
Social & emotional
- Laughs and squeals
Real laughter appears, usually in response to a person rather than an object.
Feeding
- No honey before 12 months
Honey can carry botulism spores that a baby's gut cannot handle — including in baked goods and dummies dipped in honey.
Sleep
- Infant sleep: 12–16 hours a day (4–12 months)
Including naps; 3 naps → 2 naps around 6–9 months; a consistent bedtime between 18:30 and 20:00 helps.
- Protect the nap rhythm
Roughly: 3 naps around 4 months → 2 by 6–9 months → 1 from 15–18 months → quiet time when naps end (3–5y). Norms, not targets.
Health
- Meningococcal B (Bexsero) — optional, paid
Not in the routine table; available from 2 months at the kupah, often subsidized by supplementary insurance. Discuss with the pediatrician.
- Start iron drops (7.5 mg/day)
Israeli MoH: medication-grade iron 7.5 mg/day from 4 months (preterm babies from 2 weeks, 2 mg/kg).
- Tipat Halav: 4 months
Pentavalent 2, rota 2, PCV 2; growth; head control, hands to midline, cooing, smiling checked; start iron; solids planning.
- Pentavalent — dose 2
At the 4-month visit.
- Rotavirus — dose 2 (oral)
At the 4-month visit; at least 4 weeks after dose 1.
- Pneumococcal (PCV) — dose 2
At the 4-month visit.
- Iron drops every day (4–18 months)
MoH: 7.5 mg/day at 4–6 months, then 15 mg/day to 18 months, as a registered medication; a blood count around 9–12 months.
Safety
- Skip the baby walker
Wheeled walkers cause falls down stairs and burns, and do not help a baby learn to walk.
Play & learning
- Interactive floor play (3–12 months)
30+ minutes a day spread out; reaching, rolling, sitting practice; not restrained more than 1 hour at a time.
For the parent
- Take an infant CPR & choking course
A 3-hour course (MDA, kupot, Terem) before solids and mobility; refresh every 2 years.
